چکیده

Massive black holes are key components of the assembly and evolution of cosmic structures and a number of surveys are currently on-going or planned to probe the demographics of these objects and to gain insight into the relevant physical processes. Pulsar Timing Arrays (PTAs) currently provide the only means to observe gravitational radiation from massive black hole binary systems with masses > ∼ 107M⊙. The whole cosmic population produces a stochastic background that could be detectable with upcoming Pulsar Timing Arrays. Sources sufficiently close and/or massive generate gravitational radiation that significantly exceeds the level of the background and could be individually resolved. We consider a wide range of massive black hole binary assembly scenarios, we investigate the distribution of the main physical parameters of the sources, such as masses and redshift, and explore the consequences for Pulsar Timing Arrays observations. Depending on the specific massive black hole population model, we estimate that on average at least one resolvable source produces timing residuals in the range ∼ 10 − 50 ns. Pulsar Timing Arrays, and in particular the future Square Kilometre Array (SKA), can plausibly detect these unique systems, although the events are likely to be rare. These observations would naturally complement on the high-mass end of the massive black hole distribution function future surveys carried out by the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA).

The stochastic gravitational-wave background from massive black hole binary systems: implications for observations with Pulsar Timing Arrays

Massive black hole binary systems, with masses in the range ∼ 10 − 10 M⊙, are among the primary sources of gravitational waves in the frequency window ∼ 10 Hz−0.1Hz. Pulsar Timing Arrays (PTAs) and the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) are the observational means by which we will be able to observe gravitational radiation from these systems. We carry out a systematic study of the genera...

Using Pulsars to Detect Massive Black Hole Binaries via Gravitational Radiation: Sagittarius a and Nearby Galaxies

Pulsar timing measurements can be used to detect gravitational radiation from massive black hole binaries. The ∼106d quasi-periodic flux variations in Sagittarius A (Sgr A) at radio wavelengths reported by Zhao, Bower, & Goss (2001) may be due to binarity of the massive black hole that is presumed to be responsible for the radio emission. A 106d equal-mass binary black hole is unlikely based on...

Low-Frequency Gravitational Waves from Massive Black Hole Binaries: Predictions for LISA and Pulsar Timing Arrays

The coalescence of massive black hole (BH) binaries due to galaxy mergers provides a primary source of low-frequency gravitational radiation detectable by pulsar timing measurements and by the proposed LISA (Laser Interferometry Space Antenna) observatory. We compute the expected gravitational radiation signal from sources at all redshifts by combining the predicted merger rate of galactic halo...

Search for Memory and Inspiral Gravitational Waves from Super-Massive Binary Black Holes with Pulsar Timing Arrays

The merger of a super-massive binary black hole (SBBH) is one of the most extreme events in the universe with a huge amount of energy released by gravitational radiation. Although the characteristic gravitational wave (GW) frequency around the merger event is far higher than the nHz regime optimal for pulsar timing arrays (PTAs), nonlinear GW memory might be a critical smoking gun of the merger...

Constraining the properties of the proposed supermassive black hole system in 3c66b: Limits from pulsar timing

Data from long term timing observations of the radio pulsar PSR B1855+09 have been searched for the signature of gravitational waves (G-waves) emitted by the proposed supermassive binary black hole system in 3C66B. For the case of a circular orbit, the emitted G-waves would generate detectable fluctuations in the pulse arrival times of PSR B1855+09. General expressions for the expected timing r...
